Winter Dog Walking: Safety Tips for Dark Evenings

Walking a dog in winter at night

Winter brings unique challenges for dog owners. With the sun setting before 5 PM in many parts of the world, the majority of our dog walks happen in complete darkness. Add slippery pavements and freezing temperatures to the mix, and a relaxing walk can quickly become dangerous.

Here are the essential safety tips to keep you and your dog safe this winter.

1. Be Seen, Be Safe

The number one risk during winter walks is traffic. Drivers have reduced visibility due to rain, snow, and fog. Dark clothing and dark dogs are virtually invisible to oncoming cars.

Invest in high-visibility gear. While reflective vests are good, they only work if a light is shining directly on them. An LED leash is the safest option because it actively emits light, making you visible from hundreds of feet away.

2. Protect Their Paws

Rock salt and de-icing chemicals used on sidewalks can burn your dog's paw pads. After every winter walk, rinse your dog's paws with warm water to remove any salt residue. If your dog tolerates them, dog booties provide the best protection.

3. Check the Pavement Temperature

If it's too cold for your hands, it's too cold for their paws. A good rule of thumb is the "5-second test": place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If you can't hold it there, it will freeze your dog's paws.

4. Shorten the Leash

Ice and snow make sidewalks slippery. If your dog suddenly lunges or slips, you need to have control. Keep your retractable leash locked at a shorter length, especially near roads or icy corners.

5. Bundle Up, But Not Too Much

Small, short-haired breeds (like Chihuahuas or Greyhounds) feel the cold just like we do and need a warm coat. However, thick-coated breeds (like Huskies or Samoyeds) are built for the cold and may overheat if dressed. Know your dog's limits.
