It is one of the most stressful things that can happen on a walk. You are minding your own business when a dog with no leash comes sprinting toward you. The owner is nowhere in sight or yelling "He's friendly!" from a distance.
Whether your dog is reactive or just easily overwhelmed, an off-leash dog approaching can be terrifying. Here is exactly what to do to keep everyone safe.
1. Do NOT Run (Or Pick Up Your Dog)
Running triggers a dog's predatory chase instinct. Picking your dog up is also dangerous—it can make the approaching dog jump on you, or it can make your dog feel trapped and react aggressively.
Instead: Stand completely still. Plant your feet. Keep your body between the approaching dog and your dog.
2. Lock Your Leash IMMEDIATELY
You must have total control of your dog before the other dog reaches you. If you are using a retractable leash, press the one-touch brake immediately and pull your dog in close to your side.
This is where a reliable lock mechanism matters. Our Heavy-Duty Leash allows you to lock and hold a strong dog at a very short distance with one thumb, ensuring your dog doesn't bolt forward to meet the incoming dog.
3. Use the "Block and Create Space" Method
If the loose dog keeps coming, put an obstacle between you. Step behind a car, a tree, or a trash can. If there is no obstacle, stomp your foot loudly toward the loose dog and firmly say "GO HOME!" or "NO!" Most dogs will pause if a human acts confident and territorial.
4. Throw a Treat (Yes, Really)
If the loose dog is about to reach you, toss a handful of high-value treats on the ground far away from you. This will often distract the loose dog long enough for you to walk away safely. (Only do this if you have a spare hand and can control your own dog).
5. Stay Calm for Your Dog
Your dog will pick up on your energy. If you panic, your dog will panic. Keep your leash short, breathe deeply, and speak to your dog in a calm, happy voice. Turn around and walk briskly in the opposite direction.
A Note on Gear
If you have a reactive dog, or live in an area with lots of careless owners, a heavy-duty leash with a rock-solid brake is non-negotiable. It gives you the physical strength and control you need to protect your dog in an emergency.
